India and Germany are joining forces to drive multilateral initiatives that support climate action and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Germany has joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA), an action-oriented, member-driven, collaborative platform for the advancement of solar solutions, as well as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). Both platforms were initiated by the Government of India. Germany is also backing India’s ambitious ‘One Sun One World One Grid’ initiative, launched at COP 26 in Glasgow to accelerate the adoption of green grids and solar energy worldwide.
India, on its part, has joined the InsuResilience Global Partnership on Risk Finance and Insurance, which strives to strengthen the resilience of the world’s most vulnerable people to climate and disaster risk by enabling faster, more reliable, and cost-effective responses.
In general Germany aims at forging strong partnerships with other bilateral and multilateral partners and institutions with the aim to increase impact, reduce transactions costs and achieve common goals.
In this spirit Germany, India and multilateral institutions cooperate under a variety of topics which are part of the GSDP. In the mobility sector close cooperation between the Asian Development Bank, Germany and India exists, for instance for the construction of the metro in Mumbai. In the energy sector Germany, India and the Asian Development Bank jointly work with energy distribution companies. With the World Bank, Germany and India are implementing programmes in the area of social protection and climate resilience.
As a new partner, the European Investment Bank has a joint cooperation with Germany and India for the construction of public transport in Bengaluru.
Germany gives importance to improved German-EU cooperation wherever possible. In India, there are a broad variety of co-financing agreements, especially in the areas of climate-resilient and sustainable urban development, green mobility, and support to the Indian National Mission for Clean Ganga.
